The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P046E concerns EGR pressure-sensor range/performance in the documented SKYACTIV-X system. Mazda's procedure includes the sensor's pressure connection as well as its electrical connections.
A hose can change the measurement
The listed possible causes include a disconnected or damaged vacuum hose attached to the EGR pressure sensor. A sensor that is electrically connected can therefore receive the wrong pressure information because the hose is not intact. The code does not establish that the EGR valve itself is the failed part.
The factory flow checks the EGR pressure-sensor connector and PCM connector, evaluates the sensor, then verifies the pressure-hose connection and condition. These observations distinguish an electronic measurement problem from failure to transmit the correct pressure to an otherwise functioning sensor.
Limits of the published detection text
The source references P00C7, P0069 and P006C in its detection-condition table, but its “any” wording is insufficiently clear to reconstruct a precise Boolean enable rule. No numerical pressure-difference threshold is supplied here. This article therefore does not invent one or suggest that absence of another code is sufficient by itself to set P046E.
Mazda stops EGR control as the protective response. Repair confirmation includes at least ten seconds with ignition on and engine off, followed by at least ten seconds after starting, and then a DTC check. Confirm hose routing and the exact current procedure for the vehicle before deciding on component replacement.
