Documented application
Ford 2004 model-year 6.0L diesel OBD summary, revision August 7, 2003; the cited monitor and transmission implementation only.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0487 identifies the EGR throttle position control circuit in Ford's 2004 6.0L diesel summary. Although the page calls it a functional check, its stated failure criterion is actuator-driver status indicating an open or short. The actual criterion is more useful than assuming that functional necessarily means a mechanical movement test.
Separate command-path and position faults
The adjacent P0488 check compares desired EGR throttle position with actual position. P0487 instead evaluates the electrical driver path. A valve-position mismatch and an actuator-driver electrical fault are related diagnostic possibilities, but they are not interchangeable evidence.
Ford lists continuous execution in an eight-millisecond task, a typical duration below one second and no entry conditions or prerequisite sensors. The driver check therefore does not require the particular temperature or load window of an EGR-flow assessment.
Use the correct electrical procedure
Retain any position-sensor or EGR performance codes and establish which faults are current. Then follow the 6.0L application wiring and actuator-driver diagnostic path to distinguish the control circuit from the valve's actual movement. The OBD summary does not specify a failed component, connector pinout or universal replacement. An EGR-flow complaint alone cannot substitute for the open/short evidence named by P0487.
Source and applicability
Ford 2004 model-year 6.0L diesel OBD summary, revision August 7, 2003; the cited monitor and transmission implementation only. Ford source, physical PDF pages 10, 11. The documented monitor explains the fault decision; vehicle-specific service information is still needed for connector identification and a complete repair procedure.
