P0511: Ford idle-air control electrical fault versus idle-speed error
Ford's P0511 example identifies an idle-air control solenoid open or short, distinct from overspeed and underspeed monitors.

Documented application
Ford 1997 model-year gasoline OBD summary, revision November 12, 2007; the cited monitor only, not all listed engines or transmissions.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
Ford's 1997 gasoline summary groups P0511 with P1504 as idle-air control solenoid electrical open/short faults. This is different from the functional idle-speed checks, which assess how much correction is needed to maintain the desired rpm. A high or low idle complaint alone does not establish the P0511 circuit result.
Separate the two diagnostic branches
Ford lists P0507/P1506 for overspeed and P0506/P1507 for underspeed. Those functional checks use warm-engine, closed-throttle and closed-loop conditions. The summary's 30-second duration and detailed idle-entry table belong to the functional evaluation; they should not be presented as a universal electrical P0511 test recipe.
The source's prose and table also reverse some numerical idle-error examples. This article does not use those conflicting numbers as specifications. The electrical-versus-functional distinction remains clear.
Use electrical evidence before selecting a repair
Retain accompanying idle-performance codes and follow the exact application's IAC circuit procedure to distinguish the solenoid, wiring and controller path. P0511 does not independently prove that cleaning the throttle body or adjusting an idle stop will correct the fault. The source explains the monitored category but supplies neither a universal pinout nor a component replacement verdict.

The documented monitor explains the fault decision; vehicle-specific service information is still needed for connector identification and a complete repair procedure.
