Documented application

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the documented monitor variants. No individual model, engine or calibration fitment inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

Ford assigns P052B to bank 1 cam timing that is over-retarded during cold-start emission reduction. The code's useful context is the early cam-phasing request, which may no longer be active when the vehicle is inspected warm.

Capture the cold-start response

The monitor requires enabled cam timing control and a command to advance or retard. Ford lists five seconds of monitoring and an entry window within 60 seconds of the start of cold-start cam-phase monitoring. A comparison made outside that window does not establish how the system responded during the event.

Preserve requested and measured phase together. A retarded position can be normal when requested; the diagnostic issue is the mismatch relative to the intended cold-start control.

Keep two failure patterns distinct

The source gives an 11-degree over-retard target-error threshold. It also describes insufficient movement when ten degrees of phasing is commanded but less than two degrees occurs. The latter response pattern is not proof that every P052B is a particular stuck mechanical pin.

The page is a monitor summary and does not identify a replacement part, oil specification or timing-drive repair. Use the matching engine's procedure to determine the cause of the recorded discrepancy. Verification should exercise the eligible cold-start command and confirm the relevant check completes, rather than assuming a normal warm cam-angle value resolves a condition confined to start-up.

Source and applicability

This explanation covers the cited Ford monitor variants, not every vehicle displaying this code. Match the engine, sensor architecture and calibration before applying numerical limits.
