Documented application

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD summary, July 16, 2024 revision; only the described monitor and architecture. Model, engine and calibration fitment are not inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P05B1 identifies the control-circuit/open classification for active grille shutter B in Ford’s example. The actuator’s own microcontroller detects a shorted or open motor coil. This is electrical feedback from the assembly, distinct from comparing where the shutter finishes its travel.

Open and short checks have different schedules

The source says the open-coil check occurs once at the beginning of movement and again 500 milliseconds after movement ends. The short-coil check instead runs continuously. A measurement taken in the middle of an unrelated operating period may therefore miss the specific opportunity used for the open check.

Initiating a movement command is the entry condition, and the table lists 30 seconds to register a failure. That reporting period should not be mistaken for a requirement to hold an external test lead on the actuator for that length of time.

Interpret feedback with its command history

A useful record aligns the commanded movement, reported fault and completion state. If the shutter reaches an expected position but still reports an electrical fault, successful motion does not erase the microcontroller’s coil evidence. Conversely, failure to reach a stop does not by itself establish an open winding.

The table maps the fault to the detailed representation P05C1_49, while P05C1 with a different suffix is used for temperature monitoring. Retaining the full diagnostic identifier avoids merging those conditions. No connector pin or safe direct-power test is supplied by this summary; component-level checks require the matching service instructions.
