The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P05C5 reports high input from Mazda's SKYACTIV-X water-pressure sensor. The PCM recognizes output above 4.58 V for five continuous seconds.
Separate voltage from actual water pressure
A high electrical reading does not establish excessive cooling-system pressure. The possible causes include a supply or signal short to power, a short between the supply and signal, and an open signal or ground circuit. Sensor and PCM connections and the sensor itself are also considered.
The source directs the coolant switching valve fully open and activates the electric thermostat heater as protective actions. It additionally inhibits EGR only in the specified catalyst-damaging misfire context. These commanded changes are consequences of unreliable pressure information, not proof that each commanded component has failed.
Why the ground branch matters
The diagnosis evaluates both external power intrusion and continuity of the signal and ground paths. Concentrating only on a powered signal wire can miss an open reference path that creates the same high-input result. Mazda places sensor inspection after those connection and circuit checks.
Verification uses the specified running self-test followed by inspection for a pending recurrence. The five-second criterion belongs to this Mazda monitor and does not provide a safe pressure limit for opening the cooling system. Use the factory hot-fluid precautions and professional testing procedure before any component access or replacement decision.
