Documented application
Documented monitors in gm-2025-03a, model year 2025. These are module/calibration examples; vehicle, engine and transmission applicability must be confirmed independently.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0621 concerns the generator L-terminal circuit in the cited GM table. The controller evaluates electrical integrity, including open and short-circuit signatures, rather than reporting a direct battery-capacity test.
Pay attention to engine state
The displayed open and power-short branches require the engine not to be running and no crank movement to be detected. Other prerequisites include generator presence, adequate run/crank voltage and absence of specified crank/cam faults. An engine-running voltage measurement does not reproduce those stopped-engine conditions.
The open-circuit specification uses at least 200 kilohms between the voltage-source pin and controller ground. The power-short specification refers to no more than 0.5 ohm to the controller's 5-volt source. These describe fault-detection design; they do not authorize resistance measurement on a powered circuit.
Accumulated time matters
The shown open/power-short decision uses five seconds of cumulative faulty time at a 250-millisecond task rate. A brief return to normal may therefore not tell the whole event history. The page also begins a separate ground-short branch with its own timing; this article does not assume every branch shares the first timeout.
Establish which branch and operating state apply before condemning the generator. Verification should include the relevant L-terminal electrical monitor under its enabling conditions. The source classifies this example as Type C without an emissions MIL, so an unlit engine lamp is not evidence of circuit integrity.
