P0643: Reference A high must be distinguished from high battery supply

P0643 checks the TCM’s VREF1 rail above 5.5 volts while the main supply is within a separate eligible range.

Documented application

2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2, specific documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability require confirmation; application-matrix filename join is unresolved.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0643 is the high-reference-voltage A fault. GM’s TCM example evaluates VREF1, a sensor supply rail, and separately qualifies the main battery voltage. The two voltages answer different diagnostic questions.

The high reference boundary

The monitor detects VREF1 above 5.5 volts. It uses 50 millivolts of hysteresis and at least 40 milliseconds of fault confirmation. A momentary sample near the threshold should therefore not be interpreted without the timing and hysteresis context.

Main supply must be above 8.75 and below 18 volts, the engine must not be cranking, and the key state must not be STOP. Existing P0882 or P0883 faults disable the assessment. The source describes continuous monitoring only within those eligible conditions.

Follow the affected supply network

Preserve the VREF1 reading and any shared-input symptoms without assuming that one sensor is responsible. A high rail can affect interpretation of connected signals, but this summary does not map the branches or localize the source of the condition.

The appropriate service distribution diagram and circuit procedure are required before isolating loads or selecting a component. The code does not prove a failed controller, and a high battery reading alone does not recreate its reference-rail test. Verification needs the correct rail to return to an acceptable state while the qualified monitor actually runs.

Source and applicability

This explanation covers the cited GM monitor, not every vehicle carrying this code. The application-matrix filename does not resolve cleanly to this file, so no model or engine fitment is assigned. GM diagnostic table, PDF page 909.
