Documented application
2004 Volkswagen Touareg (7LA), V10 5.0L diesel BKW; original diagnostic chart and component procedure; confirm installed transmission where relevant.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
The BKW V10 DTC chart identifies P0679 as the cylinder 9 glow-plug circuit entry. The corresponding Volkswagen glow-plug procedure establishes the electrical prerequisites and an individual plug check; it does not provide a P0679-specific numerical setting threshold.
Confirm the supply conditions before testing the plug
The procedure requires sound fuses in the left plenum-chamber electrical box, battery voltage of at least 11.5 V, and valid engine-to-chassis grounds. Those conditions matter because a glow-plug assessment made with inadequate supply or grounding can be misleading.
Volkswagen uses a specified voltage-test lamp to evaluate each disconnected plug. That is an equipment-specific workshop check, not a recommendation to connect the glow plug directly to an arbitrary power source or infer failure from an improvised test.
Cylinder identity affects access
The manual notes that cylinders 1 and 6 can be checked without removing the intake manifolds. It does not extend that access shortcut to cylinder 9. The correct removal and access procedure must therefore be consulted instead of assuming all ten plugs are equally accessible.
The chart establishes the affected cylinder circuit but does not prove that every glow plug needs replacement or that a cold-start complaint has only one cause. No particular dashboard warning behavior is supplied here.
Verification should assess cylinder 9 using the approved method after the electrical prerequisites are satisfied, then confirm the original circuit fault is resolved. The source's tightening and access instructions belong to this V10 engine and should not be generalized to other diesel configurations.
