P0742: Confirm the failure type before treating this as a stuck converter clutch

Understand the conflict between the generic P0742 label and Ford’s published electrical mapping before selecting a test.

Documented application

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the cited monitor and transmission architectures. No individual vehicle fitment or universal calibration is inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0742 needs an explicit source warning. The generic dictionary calls it a converter-clutch stuck-on code, but Ford's cited gasoline summary lists P0742 with P0740_11 as a short-to-ground electrical result. These descriptions direct the investigation toward different evidence, so neither should be silently substituted for the other.

Read the actual controller report

The same Ford document assigns functionally stuck-on behavior to P2758/P0740_7E, while its architecture table lists P2769/P0740_11 for the ground-short category. Preserve the reporting module, complete suffix and vehicle-specific diagnostic definition before choosing an electrical or mechanical branch.

For the documented electrical branch, the monitor compares output-driver feedback with command state. For the stuck-on functional branch, it looks for very low converter slip even though the clutch is commanded off, under adequate input torque. Those are materially different tests.

Why a low slip value is not enough

Low slip during an on command is expected behavior; low slip during an eligible off command is the relevant functional contradiction. Conversely, a driver-status ground classification cannot be resolved simply by observing converter speed later.

This article does not resolve the published identifier conflict for every calibration. It explains why the full failure type is essential and why a generic label alone cannot justify replacing a converter, solenoid or controller. The applicable Ford diagnostic definition must establish which result the specific vehicle actually reported.
