P074A: Second gear may fail engagement because synchronizer speed is unsuitable
P074A monitors repeated second-gear engagement failure, using differential speed and actuation-state timing in the GM example.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2, specific documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability require confirmation; application-matrix filename join is unresolved.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P074A means the controller could not engage second gear. GM’s documented strategy considers synchronizer differential speed and the progress of the gear-engagement state sequence. It does not simply equate an unsuccessful gear request with a broken gear.
Speed and timing provide different failure paths
The initial differential-speed comparison uses a gear-specific limit plus 250 rpm. Another comparison uses the maximum differential speed for the current engagement state. Those referenced limits are not one universal allowable speed difference.
The monitor can also fail when transition conditions remain unmet until the state timer reaches its calibrated timeout. Second-gear engagement must be requested and active, system pressure must exceed 4.5 bar, and error or bypass application states are excluded. At least four failed engagement attempts confirm the result.
Record the attempt before selecting a cause
Retain requested gear, synchronizer differential speed and the state where progress stopped. Excessive differential speed and a timed-out state transition are different evidence, even though both can produce P074A.
The source shares this strategy across engagement codes, but this row belongs to second gear. It does not establish a specific hydraulic, sensor or mechanical repair. The exact state limits require the referenced calibration information. Follow the appropriate transmission service procedure rather than using the added 250 rpm as a standalone threshold or forcing repeated engagement attempts.
Source and applicability
This explanation covers the cited GM monitor, not every vehicle carrying this code. The application-matrix filename does not resolve cleanly to this file, so no model or engine fitment is assigned. GM diagnostic table, PDF page 1043.
