Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the cited monitor and transmission architectures. No individual vehicle fitment or universal calibration is inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0772 describes functionally failed-on behavior of shift solenoid E in the cited Ford strategy. The expected outcome of the control action is the reference. A current or voltage observation without the intended state cannot establish that functional contradiction.
Repeated events matter
The monitor's example filter adds three for a bad functional event and subtracts one when a clutch is in the correct non-shifting state. The storage boundary is nine. This weighting means that a recent successful event does not necessarily explain the history that produced the stored code.
Ford also distinguishes the functional observation around transitions from continuous electrical fault monitoring. Keep those timing descriptions separate when deciding whether a capture actually verifies the reported result.
Use the E-channel failure type
The architecture table pairs P0772 with P0770_7E. P0986/P0770_12 is the E circuit short-to-power category. Both may appear in an investigation, but neither should be silently renamed as the other: one is functional state evidence and the other is an electrical path classification.
Preserve the command, observed response and companion electrical results at the same time. The summary does not identify a particular E valve location, clutch element or internal leakage path. A justified diagnostic decision needs the exact transmission's procedure to determine why the requested function and observed result disagreed.
