P0783: the Jeep 3–4 shift did not produce the expected speed change
The WJ/WG gas-powertrain manual's P0783 procedure applies to the transmission branch that excludes the five-speed 545RFE.

Documented application
2002 WJ/WG gas powertrain manual 02wgep; hydraulic-fan and A/C circuits as documented; transmission procedures exclude 5-speed 545RFE (P1762 marked without DG4).
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
The WJ/WG gas-powertrain manual's P0783 procedure applies to the transmission branch that excludes the five-speed 545RFE. It describes a requested 3–4 change for which the expected engine-speed drop does not occur within four seconds. Three consecutive failed tests are required. This is an observed shift-performance result, rather than a direct electrical continuity test.
Related faults change the order of diagnosis
The factory chart prioritizes transmission supply, torque-converter and 3–4 solenoid circuit faults. It also lists park/neutral, cam-signal and throttle-position faults that need attention before this performance diagnosis. Those inputs help define the operating state, so their faults can undermine a conclusion drawn from engine-speed response alone.
Fluid level and condition are assessed next. The procedure then uses dedicated pressure measurements to determine whether the commanded shift produces the required hydraulic sequence. A missing pressure response and a correct pressure response with poor mechanical operation do not support the same repair.
Contamination or burnt oil changes the internal investigation. The factory tree considers the source of debris and the overdrive-related seals and clutches, rather than assuming every P0783 is repaired by replacing the 3–4 solenoid.
Verification belongs in a workshop
The pressure and shift tests require controlled conditions, equipment and vehicle restraint. This article does not reproduce the manual's road-test steps. A completed diagnosis should explain the observed command, pressure and speed response, then verify the actual repair. The findings here should not be applied to a 545RFE simply because it is installed in another Jeep.
