The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P081C is a park-input circuit code. Mazda's body control module uses P081C:23 for the NOT-P position switch, detecting a stuck-on condition over five consecutive checks.

The signal is the opposite of a simple park label

The NOT-P switch reports a selector condition outside park. Retaining that name prevents confusion when comparing switch state with lever position. The full :23 suffix and BCM origin help identify the specific stuck-signal diagnosis.

Mazda's cause list includes the selector connection, the NOT-P switch, the BCM connection, a signal short to ground and the BCM itself. The procedure first repeats the transition between park and a non-park position with specified holding times, then checks the connections, switch and signal path if the fault remains.

Repeated transitions matter

A single successful selection of park does not necessarily demonstrate that a fault defined over consecutive operations is resolved. The source's verification recreates the relevant state changes and checks the BCM again, followed by review of other codes.

Because this concerns gear-position information, testing must be performed with the vehicle secured and the proper professional precautions. Do not infer actual mechanical park engagement solely from a scan-tool switch value, and do not bypass the input to suppress a warning. The useful conclusion identifies whether the switch or its circuit remains stuck despite the selector transitions.
