P08C8: Why the synchronizer valve open-load check runs with its output off

Understand P08C8 through the controller’s off-state load test and the operating conditions needed for a valid result.

Documented application

2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2 monitor tables only; model, engine and transmission applicability are not established by the unresolved application-matrix filename join.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P08C8 denotes a control-circuit/open fault in the generic catalog. The illustrated GM implementation assigns it to synchronizer actuation valve 1. The crucial detail is that the open-load assessment occurs with the output switched off, rather than during a hydraulic movement test.

The electrical behavior being evaluated

With an intact load, the monitored node between the sense resistor and load should be pulled toward battery supply. The driver applies a very small diagnostic current and attempts to regulate that node toward a lower voltage. If it succeeds, the expected load path is not behaving normally and the driver reports open load.

The table requires the low-side output to have been off for more than five milliseconds. It also specifies a 150-millisecond failure confirmation period. These are separate pieces of timing; a command transition alone is not the completed diagnostic result.

Why an inactive valve can still be tested

This mechanism explains why the fault may be found without observing a failed gear movement. It checks the circuit's off-state electrical response, not whether oil pressure moved a rod. That distinction helps prevent a hydraulic symptom from being treated as the sole proof of an electrical open.

Eligibility includes battery voltage between 8.75 and 18 V, no cranking and the required controller operating state. P0882 and P0883 inhibit this diagnosis. A useful retest therefore needs the driver status, output command and valid supply conditions together; merely seeing the valve commanded off does not establish either failure or recovery.
