P0973: A low solenoid A circuit result is not a low hydraulic-pressure measurement

Learn how Ford P0973 classifies a ground-side electrical fault and separates it from solenoid A functional failure.

Documented application

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the cited monitor and transmission architectures. No individual vehicle fitment or universal calibration is inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0973 is the shift-solenoid A circuit-low classification in the generic dictionary. Ford's cited table makes that more specific: it is the short-to-ground branch, shown as P0750_11. The word low therefore describes electrical fault evidence, not measured line pressure or a weak shift by itself.

Read the electrical feedback in its command context

The general shift-solenoid monitor operates continuously for electrical checks and uses smart-driver feedback. Ford gives a typical requirement for the fault report to persist for 1.5 seconds. The summary does not publish a universal A-terminal voltage that the reader can substitute for that internal driver classification.

Functional failed-off behavior is separately identified as P0751/P0750_7F. A channel that does not produce the expected response and a channel classified electrically toward ground are different findings, even if both require attention in the same investigation.

What verification should retain

Preserve the complete code and suffix, commanded A activity and electrical status at the event. A later normal hydraulic response does not locate a former grounding path. A failed shift likewise does not establish whether the fault lies inside the load, wiring or output stage.

The A designation is architecture dependent and does not prove a universal valve location. Use the matching circuit procedure to isolate the reported path. The source supports the electrical-versus-functional distinction, but does not justify a particular part replacement from P0973 alone.
