P0C96: Temperature sensor K's signal changes excessively
GM's P0C96 example detects intermittent movement in battery temperature sensor K rather than a fixed hot or cold reading.

Documented application
2018 GM 18OBDG02 HPC2 / BSM diagnostic monitor; per-vehicle and calibration applicability not established.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0C96 concerns hybrid/EV battery temperature sensor K circuit intermittent/erratic. The 2018 GM monitor looks at the total magnitude of recent changes in K's signal. A temperature that returns to normal can still have produced a valid instability fault.
The failure window
The controller integrates absolute changes over ten samples, with a listed threshold above 10. Four failed evaluations among five at 100-millisecond intervals satisfy the diagnostic's requirement. GM lists Type B, two trips.
This test needs system voltage above 10.2 V and valid battery-interface communication under the specified fault-group rules. An intermittent connection is a possible explanation documented by GM, but the code alone cannot identify where such a connection might be.
Differentiate K's fault types
A fixed temperature discrepancy, a circuit endpoint and a fluctuating signal call for different evidence. P0C96 supports reviewing K's time trace; treating it only as an overheating report would miss the changing electrical input. Capture the event before clearing memory, especially if companion temperature codes appear.
The applicable vehicle procedure must establish where sensor K is located and how its path is diagnosed. Following a correction, a useful result is stable credible data through an enabled evaluation. A single plausible workshop reading or an erased stored code is insufficient. Do not access or probe internal traction-battery sensing circuits without qualified personnel and the required high-voltage precautions.
Source and applicability
This explanation follows the documented GM monitor, not a verified application to every vehicle with this code. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and calibration in current service information. GM diagnostic table, physical page 924.
