P0D22: Charger output current deviation or unavailable output

P0D22 can result from excessive output-current deviation or an enabled GM charger that reports its high-voltage supply unavailable.

Documented application

15OBDG01 Hybrid Diagnostics, cited controller and monitor only. Historical calibration limits are not universal specifications; per-code vehicle, engine and hardware applicability must be verified.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

Two distinct failure paths

The GM P0D22 monitor has two mutually exclusive strategies. Part A compares actual charger high-voltage output current with the commanded current and applies an allowed percentage deviation. Part B addresses an enabled charger that has not made its high-voltage supply available. A single description such as “weak charger” hides this important distinction.

For Part A, the charger must be in constant-current or constant-voltage control with commanded current above 0.5 amp. The supporting curve varies the allowance with desired current: its listed values include 35% at 3 amps, 30% at 4 amps and 20% at 5 amps. These are calibration points, not a universal fixed current-error limit.

For Part B, the high-voltage supply enable command must be true, commanded voltage above 201 volts and the turn-on delay expired at six seconds or more. Failure is the supply status remaining unavailable. Both strategies require system voltage above 9 volts and use 255 failures within 320 samples at 100-millisecond intervals.

What to establish before choosing a repair

The diagnostic record needs to distinguish inaccurate delivered current from an output that never became available. For the former, command and measured current are essential; for the latter, enable status and elapsed turn-on time matter. This reasoning does not by itself identify an internal charger defect.

One charging-contactor enable field is incomplete across the original page break. It is therefore not reconstructed here. Confirm the full vehicle-specific enable logic before testing. The source is a monitor summary, not permission to perform live high-voltage measurements or replace the charger from P0D22 alone.
