The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2253 is the high-input fault for the oxygen-sensor negative-current control circuit. Mazda's SKYACTIV-D page calls it the air/fuel sensor minus-current circuit.
What is actually high
The monitored signal exceeds 4.57 V for five seconds with battery voltage between 11 and 16 V and the specified delay after the engine-on ignition condition. This is an electrical threshold. It should not be translated directly into a rich mixture, a high exhaust temperature or an excessive oxygen concentration.
Mazda lists a signal-minus circuit short to power, sensor and PCM connector defects, a failed sensor and a PCM malfunction. The factory flow checks the connections and the short-to-power path before evaluating the sensor. A damaged wire can therefore imitate an internal sensor fault at the PCM input.
Account for the control response
The fail-safe restricts torque and maximum engine speed and disables DENOx/DESOx, compulsory particulate-filter regeneration and EGR control. A regeneration function being unavailable may follow the circuit fault rather than indicate a separate DPF failure.
Repair completion uses the applicable self-test and pending-code inspection. Restore trustworthy sensor-circuit operation before assessing any remaining emissions-control issue. Professional testing must follow the exact air/fuel-sensor procedure; do not jumper the minus-current circuit or infer a sensor replacement from the high-input label without the supporting connection and wiring checks.
