P2682: Coolant bypass control low means a reported short to ground

Ford diesel P2682 uses the output stage’s short-to-ground classification rather than a coolant-temperature threshold.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2682 identifies engine coolant bypass valve A control circuit low. In Ford’s diesel summary, the power stage reports a short-to-ground error in the actuator circuit. The word low refers to that electrical classification, not to coolant temperature or coolant level.

Keep the three circuit branches distinct

The monitor is continuous with a typical five-second duration. P2681 is the corresponding open-load report, while P2683 identifies short to power. A code reader may group all three as coolant-bypass faults, but the individual classifications direct different electrical questions.

Ford lists no separate sensor prerequisite for this check. A normal temperature reading therefore does not by itself demonstrate that the bypass-valve output circuit passed its short-to-ground assessment.

What remains unknown from the code

The summary does not locate the short in the actuator, harness, connector, or control electronics. It also does not provide a universal voltage or resistance value for a manual test.

A useful investigation confirms the exact actuator and wiring for the actual engine, preserves companion circuit codes, and follows the appropriate service isolation procedure. Do not infer a failed thermostat or a particular valve position from P2682 alone. The source supports an electrical fault classification; cooling-system behavior and mechanical valve operation need their own evidence, especially before any intervention in a hot or pressurized system.

Source and applicability

This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 103.
