P2731: A clutch fails to release despite an electrically functional solenoid

Understand the shift-slip evidence behind P2731 and how it differs from a solenoid circuit fault.

Documented application

2025 GM 25OBDG03B documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability must be confirmed from the matching service information; no model fitment is inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2731 identifies a pressure-control solenoid F stuck-on result in this GM transmission monitor. The distinctive point is that the electrical circuit is considered functional while hydraulic pressure continues to hold an off-going clutch. The controller infers that behavior from clutch-slip information during a qualifying shift.

Look for release evidence during the shift

When the clutch is commanded off, its slip should reflect release. The failure description concerns slip remaining near zero because the clutch continues carrying torque. The table associates this monitor with C6 clutch control, but its detailed clutch designation depends on the transmission variant.

Slip limits and confirmation times vary by shift type. A garage shift, power downshift and other shift events are not evaluated with one identical window. Applying a single stationary slip reading to every case would miss this operating-context requirement.

Electrical and speed-signal health are prerequisites

The source requires functional solenoid drivers and excludes relevant electrical, performance and speed-sensor faults. If those inputs are invalid, the hydraulic inference loses its stated basis. The monitor also relies on input, output and intermediate speed information rather than directly observing the valve position.

A useful investigation retains the shift type, off-going clutch command and trustworthy slip trace. This supports examining failed hydraulic release after valid electrical operation is established. It does not prove a particular valve-body defect or supply a universal internal transmission repair procedure.
