P2C17: Exhaust Hall sensor B can report movement that the controller never commanded
Learn the state-sequence evidence behind P2C17 and why engine timing references must remain valid.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG03B documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability must be confirmed from the matching service information; no model fitment is inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2C17 is the performance result for exhaust profile-position sensor B, called exhaust Hall sensor 2 in the GM row. The controller sees feedback associated with a profile-pin shift but has no matching shift command. The electrical signal can be present while its reported event remains inconsistent with control history.
A normal endpoint does not explain the event
The source recognizes extending, extended and retracted states. An uncommanded sequence through those states can finish at a normal-looking retracted position. A snapshot taken afterward therefore cannot reconstruct the diagnostic evidence by itself.
The page’s numerical state boundaries are not accompanied by clear physical units. They describe internal feedback recognition and should not be interpreted as universal connector voltages or mechanical travel limits.
Preserve the qualified engine-cycle context
The engine must be running, supply above 11 V and the diagnostic enabled. Relevant crankshaft and intake/exhaust cam-sensor faults must not be active. Without sound reference signals, the interpretation of a profile event relative to engine operation is weakened.
Four failed readings out of five establish the stated result. Retain the exhaust B-channel transitions, command history and reference status together. The source does not prove whether physical pin movement occurred unexpectedly or whether the Hall feedback misrepresented it. The matching service procedure must resolve that distinction before a sensor or actuator is condemned.
Source and applicability
2025 GM 25OBDG03B documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability must be confirmed from the matching service information; no model fitment is inferred. These criteria explain controller logic, not a complete repair procedure. 25OBDG03B, PDF page 914.
