P0534: hybrid cooling performance can fail for more than low charge
GM documents P0534 across battery-cooling temperature response and refrigerant-pressure checks, with extensive sensor-validity requirements.

Documented application
Document-level 2015 GM diagnostic table; per-code vehicle/engine/calibration applicability not established.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0534 in the cited GM hybrid table is labeled refrigerant charge loss, but the strategy is broader: inadequate cooling performance, low charge or a restricted refrigerant line can contribute. Its cases include battery thermal-conditioning response and refrigerant-pressure behavior.
The monitored cooling load matters
One branch observes the difference between energy-storage coolant outlet and inlet temperatures while active cooling is requested. It qualifies valve position, pump operation and compressor speed. A cabin that happens to feel cool does not demonstrate that this battery-conditioning evaluation passed.
The source uses different thermal thresholds according to whether the compressor is cooling both cabin and battery or the battery alone. This article does not invent a universal temperature difference; those limits belong to the referenced calibration tables and operating mode.
Pressure branches have their own timing
Other cases examine low-side pressure with the compressor off or running, while a further case evaluates high-side pressure. Ambient temperature, compressor-off time and pressure-sensor validity qualify those checks. The same code therefore cannot be reduced to a single recharge decision.
Several related pump, valve-control and sensor faults inhibit evaluation. Diagnose whether those prerequisites were valid before interpreting a failed or incomplete cooling test.
A useful service record identifies which case failed, the cooling request, compressor state, relevant temperatures and pressure evidence. Refrigerant and hybrid thermal-system work requires qualified equipment and procedures; the code alone does not establish a leak location or a safe amount of refrigerant to add.
