Documented application
Ford SSM 46719: specified 2017 Explorer/Taurus/Police vehicles with 3.5L or 3.7L TiVCT engines, built 2017-06-14 through 2017-06-21; P0740/P0743 in PCM. C168 pin 14 lead is limited to that documented production group.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
A connector lead for a narrow vehicle group
P0743 is an electrical torque-converter-clutch fault, but Ford SSM 46719 documents a specific connection issue worth checking before replacing transmission components. The message covers certain 2017 Explorer, Taurus and Police vehicles with 3.5-liter or 3.7-liter TiVCT engines built from June 14 through June 21, 2017. An illuminated malfunction indicator lamp may accompany P0740 or P0743 in the powertrain control module.
The production window and engine specification are essential. This source does not establish that all 2017 Ford vehicles, all Explorer engines or other model years share the same connector concern.
What makes the inspection relevant
Ford directs technicians to check pin 14 in connector C168 for proper fit, terminal tension, terminal pushout and damage before replacing components. These are different connection failures: a terminal can be physically present yet fail to maintain a reliable mating contact, or it can be displaced within the connector.
The diagnostic implication is that the electrical path deserves verification before a torque-converter or solenoid diagnosis is accepted. However, the bulletin does not say every matching P0743 is caused by that terminal. If C168 has no concern, it specifically returns the technician to the normal diagnostic routines for the stored codes.
Where terminal replacement is necessary, the historical message identifies a pigtail kit as a source of the terminal and wire lead; current part selection should be confirmed for the vehicle. This is a targeted professional connector inspection, not an instruction to force probes into the terminal. Repair verification must establish reliable circuit operation, rather than merely clearing the PCM memory.
