P0B61: block 8 high-voltage sensing versus a rationality fault

GM P0B61 is the block 8 high-range branch; it uses a different test from the adjacent pack-voltage comparison code.

Documented application

GM 2010 10OBDG10 Hybrid Diagnostics, cited BPCM or hybrid-controller monitor only. Historical calibration values are not universal specifications; no per-code model, engine or hardware fitment has been established.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0B61 concerns the high side of block 8 voltage sensing in this GM calibration. It is a report about a measured channel exceeding its allowed range. The title does not establish whether the battery itself, a connection or the measurement electronics caused that report.

Separate the two monitor types

The high-range test looks for block 8 above 23 V. It requires fifteen failing observations among twenty samples, taken every 100 ms. That is the direct range check documented for this code.

P0B5F on the same page instead calculates disagreement between block and pack voltage, and also uses block 9. Those conditions are not interchangeable. A technician reviewing both codes should preserve their original status and chronology rather than assuming they are duplicate reports of a proven battery defect.

Evaluate the supporting conditions

The high test is enabled in BPCM RUN mode with the 12 V supply between 9 and 18 V and without active P0A1F. A later scan taken with the controller outside those conditions may show no fresh failure simply because the test is not eligible.

Useful evidence includes the block 8 trace, concurrent pack readings and the supporting controller faults. The table does not publish a connector test, resistance specification or repair for every vehicle that displays P0B61. Match the exact hybrid system before using any threshold, and leave high-voltage access to trained service personnel.
