P2457: EGR cooler undercooling is evaluated against coolant temperature

Ford diesel P2457 requires commanded cooling and closed-loop EGR operation before judging downstream EGR temperature.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2457 is EGR cooler performance. Ford’s diesel monitor specifically evaluates undercooling while the bypass valve is commanded to the cooling position and EGR operates in closed loop. High downstream EGR temperature outside that commanded state is not automatically the same test.

Engine variants use different temperature references

For the documented 6.7L strategy, the failure comparison is downstream EGR temperature above coolant temperature plus 88°C. The 3.0L description instead uses a variable mapped offset. Transferring the 6.7L fixed difference directly to a 3.0L vehicle would discard that distinction.

The monitor runs once per driving cycle after its conditions are met, with a typical twelve-second duration. Entry requirements include coolant at 70–130°C, speed at 1,100–3,500 rpm, controlled EGR flow, and normal engine mode. Separate timers require qualifying bypass position, exhaust temperature, and EGR flow to persist.

What a meaningful temperature comparison needs

Useful evidence pairs downstream EGR and coolant temperatures with commanded bypass state and valid operating conditions. A brief temperature difference during a transition does not establish that the timed undercooling monitor completed.

The code does not identify whether the cause is the cooler, bypass function, temperature information, or another system condition. Ford’s summary provides no universal flow-test or replacement instruction. Its diagnostic value is the commanded cooling context and engine-specific comparison, which should guide the applicable service procedure rather than an assumption that every P2457 means a blocked cooler.
