P245A: The cooler-bypass open check requires an off driver but a non-closed request

Understand the distinct command and requested-position conditions in GM P245A and why they should not be collapsed into a generic valve test.

Documented application

2025 GM 04A documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and controller calibration applicability must be established separately; no model fitment is inferred from the file.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P245A identifies an open control circuit for the bank 1 EGR cooler bypass. In the cited GM implementation, the hardware interface assesses load resistance on the high-pressure EGR cooler-bypass motor circuit. This is an electrical integrity result rather than direct evidence that the cooler is obstructed.

Driver state and requested position are different conditions

The source requires the H-bridge driver to be off while the valve is requested somewhere other than its fully closed default position. Those statements refer to different aspects of control and should not be collapsed into an instruction that the valve must simply be on or off.

The open classification uses load resistance above 200 kΩ, reported by the hardware interface. The system must be outside cranking, relay supply above 11 V and diagnostics enabled. The hardware error status must be determinate, so an unavailable result is not a confirmed open circuit.

Interpret the repeated electrical finding

The monitor counts 160 failures within 200 samples on a 12.5-millisecond task and uses two-trip reporting. Preserve the requested position, bridge state and hardware status alongside that history. A different commanded state may not reproduce the same assessment.

The summary does not locate an interruption inside the motor, harness or controller, and it supplies no connector-level resistance procedure. It also does not justify a cooler replacement from an electrical open-circuit code. Use the matching actuator and circuit information to identify the fault before choosing a repair.
