P27B4: Gear-direction supervision distinguishes launch from wrong-direction events
Understand the two Ford P27B4 representations used for internal gear-detection supervision on eight- and ten-speed automatics.

Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD summary, July 16, 2024 revision; only the described monitor and architecture. Model, engine and calibration fitment are not inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P27B4 is listed by Ford as internal transmission gear-detection control performance on eight- or ten-speed automatic applications. The detailed representations distinguish an unintended-launch classification, P073D_48, from a wrong-driving-direction classification, P073F_48. Retaining that distinction matters more than treating the generic description as one undifferentiated transmission fault.
The supervised event is not a component identity
Both entries are marked non-MIL. They belong to continuous internal monitoring with a general registration period below one second. A brief supervisory event can therefore be stored without a check-engine indication, and a later normal range display does not recreate the original operating state.
Unintended launch and wrong-direction evidence concern different relationships between requested and achieved behavior. Neither label alone identifies a faulty selector, solenoid, clutch or internal gear.
Preserve direction and command information
Record the complete diagnostic identifier, transmission architecture, requested range and any related gear-state or speed findings. The article does not extend the eight-/ten-speed qualification to every vehicle that can display P27B4.
Ford does not publish a universal speed threshold, permissible movement distance or physical test for this supervisory entry. The appropriate procedure must establish which safety relationship failed without deliberately provoking vehicle movement. A repair decision requires the matching range, speed and control evidence; the generic code title does not supply that missing causal diagnosis.
