P27B5: Overspeed protection and ratio plausibility are different supervision branches
Learn how Ford’s P27B5 subtypes distinguish driveline overspeed protection from shaft-speed ratio plausibility.

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD summary, July 16, 2024 revision; only the described monitor and architecture. Model, engine and calibration fitment are not inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P27B5 concerns internal transmission gear-ratio control performance in Ford’s eight- and ten-speed automatic supervision list. Its detailed P0701_B1 representation refers to driveline-element overspeed protection, while P0701_64 concerns shaft-speed gear-ratio plausibility. Those are related control concerns, but they are not the same observation.
Preserve the branch before judging a ratio
The monitor is continuous and uses the group’s general below-one-second registration period. The listed entries are non-MIL. An absence of a check-engine indication therefore cannot be treated as proof that the supervisory relationship remained valid.
A protection-related result should not automatically be converted into a failed gear-ratio calculation. Conversely, a ratio-plausibility disagreement does not by itself establish that an element actually reached a damaging speed. The subtype preserves which interpretation the controller recorded.
Use contemporaneous speed and state evidence
A useful record includes the complete identifier, requested gear, available shaft speeds and relevant shift state. Comparing speeds from different moments can lose the relationship that a plausibility check assesses.
The summary does not give P27B5 a universal ratio tolerance, overspeed limit or repair. It also does not identify a particular clutch or gear as failed. The applicable transmission procedure is needed to establish whether the disagreement involves speed information, commanded state or controlled behavior, without importing a limit from another gearbox architecture.
