P0474: An erratic exhaust-pressure code can be a model disagreement

Ford diesel P0474 compares turbine-upstream pressure with a model during qualified running conditions.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0474 is exhaust-pressure sensor A intermittent/erratic. Ford’s diesel example detects a difference between measured and modeled turbine-upstream pressure during qualified engine operation. The title should not be reduced to a claim that a loose wire was directly detected.

The model comparison needs stable operating evidence

Ford lists two seconds to register a malfunction after the entry conditions are met. The window includes coolant at least 50°C, speed between 1,300 and 2,400 rpm, bounded torque, and a sensor not considered frozen. Ambient conditions, modeled pressure, and airflow change are also constrained.

The malfunction comparison uses separate positive and negative model-minus-sensor bounds. A discrepancy therefore needs its direction and operating context; a single pressure reading without the corresponding model cannot reproduce the check.

Distinguish it from the stopped-engine offset test

P0471, described immediately before it, compares turbine-upstream pressure with ambient pressure at zero engine speed. P0474 instead assesses a running model relationship. Passing one opportunity does not automatically establish that the other monitor’s conditions and thresholds were satisfied.

Useful verification retains the pressure-model relationship and qualifying interval, alongside electrical signal-range faults such as P0472/P0473 if present. The summary does not isolate a blocked sensing path, sensor fault, or other cause. It supplies a plausibility result that must be followed using the actual vehicle’s diagnostic procedure before parts are selected.
