Documented application

FCA 18-040-17 revision A covers specified 2017 Ram heavy-duty 6.4 L ESA/ESB applications built through May 22, 2017, with the listed transmissions.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

A software case does not prove a leak

FCA lists P2172 as a high-airflow or vacuum-leak indication in this 6.4 L powertrain update. The documented correction is software, so the diagnostic label alone is not proof that an intake component needs replacement. Other faults and actual system abnormalities must still be investigated before the bulletin path is used.

Choose the calibration for the complaint

The source offers two software choices for certain D2/DJ pickups. An optional version addresses drone, shudder or vibration during MDS/ECO operation; the standard version does not contain that particular refinement. Both versions address the remaining listed conditions, including P2172. Therefore, a P2172-only complaint does not automatically require the optional noise-related calibration.

Keep transmission-specific enhancements separate

Several improvements in the same release apply only to the 66RFE transmission. They should not be transferred to an AS66RC-equipped truck merely because both transmissions appear in the application table. Confirm the engine, transmission, build date and actual complaint, then record the selected software path and the post-repair fault result. If airflow evidence remains abnormal after the appropriate update, follow the current vehicle-specific diagnosis. This source supplies neither a universal leak-test pressure nor a guaranteed failed part. Its useful distinction is between a documented calibration-related indication and a demonstrated physical air leak.
