P2183: Escape and Corsair PHEV coolant warnings require the overheat-code distinction

Ford’s P2183 guidance separates an unresolved heater-sensor case from vehicles with additional overtemperature codes.

Documented application

Ford SSM 50325: 2021 Escape and Corsair equipped with the 2.5L plug-in hybrid powertrain; MIL with P2183 and/or P26C1.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2183 on a 2021 Escape or Corsair 2.5L PHEV may appear with a malfunction lamp and, in the case described by Ford SSM 50325, an engine-overheat message. The bulletin does not treat the message alone as proof of a failed coolant sensor or as sufficient evidence that overheating is only a software concern.

Check the physical basics and the correct sensor connection

Ford directs checking engine coolant level, inspecting the cabin-heater coolant-temperature sensor connection for contamination and completing climate-control Pinpoint Test AQ. The identified sensor is ECT sensor 2 in this application. Substituting an assumption about the main engine coolant sensor could send diagnosis to the wrong location.

A satisfactory inspection and pinpoint test are prerequisites to the bulletin’s interim path. Finding low coolant or connector contamination changes the work required; those findings should not be dismissed because the vehicle also has P2183.

Companion overtemperature codes change the outcome

The source makes a specific distinction for P1285 or P1299. If either is present, normal Workshop Manual diagnosis and repair are required. Only when no concern is found and those codes are absent does the historical message direct clearing the entries while engineering worked toward a solution.

That interim statement does not prove a later repair was released or installed, and it is not blanket permission to continue driving through an active overheat warning. Preserve the complete scan, coolant observations and warning sequence for the workshop. The useful decision is whether the vehicle satisfies the bulletin’s no-finding branch or has physical or diagnostic evidence requiring continued cooling-system investigation.
