P0521: Oil-pressure plausibility depends on pump stage and operating state
P0521 explained through the documented GM monitor: oil-pressure plausibility depends on pump stage and operating state. Diagnostic distinctions, verification and applicability limits.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG03A ECM monitor at the cited physical PDF pages only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability is not established by the file-level application matrix.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0521 evaluates an engine-oil pressure sensor that may be stuck or biased within range. The cited GM section applies to a two-stage oil pump and describes separate running comparisons for the pump's high- and low-pressure states.
Match the pressure to the commanded stage
Measured filtered pressure is compared with a stage-specific modeled value and allowed deviation. The running test requires speed between 1,400 and 4,500 rpm, modeled oil temperature between 50°C and 110°C, and more than 1.60 seconds since a pump-state change. A pressure reading taken during a stage transition should not be judged against a steady-state expectation.
The strategy also excludes an oil-aeration condition defined from sustained high-speed operation. That gate changes whether a pressure discrepancy is eligible for this sensor-rationality judgment.
Engine-off logic has an explicit limitation
The section describes an engine-off test but marks that test disabled in the cited calibration. Its printed engine-off threshold should not be presented as an active universal P0521 rule.
Record pressure, pump state, oil temperature and engine speed together. The code cannot by itself distinguish a biased signal from an actual lubrication-pressure problem. Follow the applicable professional pressure-verification procedure before deciding on a sensor or pump repair, and do not keep running an engine with an active oil-pressure warning merely to complete this monitor. Confirm a passing eligible rationality test after diagnosis.
Source and applicability
This explanation is limited to the 2025 GM 25OBDG03A monitor on page 325, page 326, page 327, page 328. Its thresholds are calibration examples, not universal specifications. Confirm the vehicle, engine and controller procedure before applying them.
