Documented application

Documented monitors in gm-2025-03a, gm-2025-04b, model year 2025. These are module/calibration examples; vehicle, engine and transmission applicability must be confirmed independently.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0630 is often summarized as VIN not programmed or incompatible. The two cited ECM tables document a specific check: at least one programmed VIN character is not valid ASCII. They do not describe a full comparison of every module's VIN.

Narrow the meaning to the tested condition

A VIN displayed on a scan tool and a VIN passing this monitor are related but different observations. The monitor looks at the validity of programmed characters. An incomplete, corrupted or otherwise invalid character representation can fail without this row identifying how the invalid data arose.

Conversely, a different but syntactically valid VIN is not explicitly covered by the displayed malfunction criterion. The generic mismatched-VIN wording should not be used to claim that this exact row proves a cross-module identity mismatch.

Programming verification

The check runs continuously at 250 milliseconds per test when the OBD manufacturer enable counter is zero. That enable state matters when judging why a fault has or has not returned during setup work.

Record the ECM's programmed identification and the applicable test status, then use the authorized vehicle-specific programming and identification process. The table does not prescribe editing individual characters by an unsupported method or replacing the module. After correction, verify the required VIN content and a passing enabled diagnostic. Both source examples classify this as Type A over one trip; the code by itself does not establish the vehicle's history or the reason its identification data became invalid.
