P0633: missing immobilizer programming is not the same as a wrong response

GM P0633 identifies an unprogrammed immobilizer secret key in the ECM, distinct from an incorrect password or challenge response.

Documented application

GM 2020 20OBDG07 engine-control programming-error monitor. Only the cited monitor and calibration are described; per-code vehicle and engine applicability has not been established.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0633 identifies missing immobilizer secret-key programming in this GM engine-controller implementation. The recorded state concerns the controller's security configuration. It is different from simply assuming that the driver's physical key has a weak battery or that a radio receiver cannot hear it.

Distinguish an absent configuration from a rejected exchange

The same source describes separate faults for an incorrect password and an incorrect immobilizer challenge response. Those neighboring checks require a secret key to have been programmed. P0633 addresses the earlier condition in which that programming is absent.

This distinction changes the information needed from the repair history. Controller replacement, programming work and the identity of the installed modules are relevant records to establish, but the code alone does not prove which service event caused the missing state. The table provides no universal relearn sequence and no basis for bypassing the immobilizer.

Verify configuration through the authorized procedure

The monitor runs under specific power-mode and immobilizer enabling conditions, and the source classifies it as a non-MIL diagnostic. Consequently, an unlit emissions warning lamp does not establish that security configuration is correct. Likewise, an unrelated engine-running symptom should not be used to reinterpret the code as an emissions-component failure.

A properly equipped workshop should confirm the exact vehicle and controller, inspect the applicable security and programming records, and use the manufacturer's authorized matching procedure where required. Confirmation must establish the required programmed state and normal authorized operation. Clearing P0633 from memory cannot create a missing key record.
