P2017: high swirl-position signal is separate from a motor high fault

P2017 evaluates the SENT swirl-position value for a high electrical-range condition under valid communication.

Documented application

Documented 2025 GM diagnostic parameter monitor in 25OBDG04B.pdf; model, engine and calibration applicability require vehicle-specific confirmation.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2017 concerns the intake-runner position-sensor signal, not the swirl motor's power circuit. In the reviewed GM table, the raw SENT position-voltage representation exceeds 99.00%, which is classified as outside the permitted electrical range high.

Separate value from transport

The monitor requires no SENT communication-loss fault. A high decoded value and an unavailable sensor message are therefore separate diagnostic findings. This distinction can prevent a communication problem from being misread as a confirmed high-range sensor output.

The percentage is the table's raw signal representation. It does not supply a universal pin-voltage threshold or establish that the flaps are physically fully open. Electrical-range validity must be established before using the represented position as trustworthy mechanical evidence.

Qualification and verification

Calibration must enable the test, cranking must be over, and the powertrain-relay supply must exceed 11 volts. GM specifies 480 failures in 600 samples, with a 6.25-millisecond function interval, and Type B reporting over two trips.

A useful confirmation checks both communication validity and a completed range diagnostic while observing the relevant raw position quantity. A no-code result obtained while communication is lost is inconclusive because that prerequisite was not satisfied. Likewise, testing the motor current alone does not verify P2017's signal branch.

The source provides monitor thresholds rather than a complete wiring or replacement procedure. This explanation is confined to the documented 2025 GM SENT swirl-position system; it does not establish every model or engine using the generic code.
