Documented application

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2703 is the direct-clutch failed-on or failed-off entry in Ford's documented 5R110W functional monitor. Intermediate and output shaft-speed information allow the controller to evaluate whether clutch behavior matches the required gear state. The code therefore needs more interpretation than a generic friction-element label supplies.
Commanded engagement changes the meaning
Ford detects failed-off behavior in its specified fifth or sixth gear states and shifts into them. Failed-on behavior is checked in other listed states where unintended engagement can be identified. These are internal transmission designations and must be matched to the actual service procedure.
The clutch is cycled and retested after a bad event. Three bad events are needed, which means one apparent successful shift does not necessarily establish that the complete monitor passed.
Keep directional evidence
P0766 is the direct-clutch failed-off companion, and P0767 is failed-on. Those codes can clarify a P2703 event, while speed-sensor faults can affect the credibility of the functional comparison. The source does not isolate the control solenoid or an internal clutch component from P2703 alone. Follow the appropriate 5R110W functional diagnosis before choosing a repair.

The documented monitor explains the fault decision; vehicle-specific service information is still needed for connector identification and a complete repair procedure.
