Documented application

DaimlerChrysler 2002 WJ/WG 45RFE/545RFE transmission diagnostic manual; cited procedures marked 5-speed 545RFE. Model and calibration-specific interpretation.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

The generic P2706 title names shift solenoid F. In the 2002 Jeep WJ/WG 45RFE/545RFE diagnostic manual, the associated procedure is the MS, or multi-select, solenoid circuit. The exact transmission context is necessary before mapping the generic letter to a physical component.

The test frequency changes with other faults

The controller checks solenoid continuity at power-up and every ten seconds afterward. It also tests immediately after a gear-ratio or pressure-switch error. Normally, three consecutive continuity failures set the fault; when the test follows one of those related errors, a single failure is sufficient. Thus, the surrounding code set changes how quickly this electrical code can mature.

The factory tree first addresses transmission-relay faults. A solenoid cannot be evaluated reliably if its common power supply is absent or incorrect. It then uses dedicated simulation equipment and circuit checks to distinguish an MS control-wire problem from a fault within the solenoid/range-sensor assembly. Open circuits and shorts to ground or voltage are separate branches.

Avoid a parts decision from the letter alone

A useful diagnosis documents whether common power was correct, whether the external MS circuit passed and whether the assembly responded as expected. The code's electrical continuity test does not independently prove an internal clutch failure. Likewise, a historical fault with normal present tests warrants intermittent-connection investigation.

The repair should be followed by the specified transmission verification and any required setup for the component actually replaced. This account is restricted to the cited Jeep procedure, with detailed steps marked for the five-speed application.
