Documented application
Ford 2004 6.0L diesel OBD summary, revision August 7, 2003, 5R110W low/reverse clutch/SSE functional monitor; internal gear labels are not a universal drive-test sequence.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
Ford uses P2704 for low/reverse clutch failed-on or failed-off behavior in the documented 5R110W monitor. The decision uses intermediate and output shaft-speed information to evaluate clutch function. It does not by itself establish an electrically open solenoid.
Manual range and shift context matter
The source checks failed-off behavior in its first or second manual gear states. Failed-on behavior is detected during upshifts from the lower gears, followed by testing in a specified lower-gear state after the bad shift. That distinction makes the selected range and shift history important evidence.
The controller cycles the clutch after each bad event and repeats the test. Three bad events are the listed monitoring duration. A road test must therefore provide the appropriate opportunities rather than merely accumulate miles.
Separate the direction and the cause
P0771 identifies failed-off and P0772 failed-on behavior in this group. Preserve those companion results and verify the shaft-speed inputs before interpreting the functional mismatch. The OBD summary does not identify whether the underlying cause is in the hydraulic control, solenoid or internal clutch assembly. The application-specific transmission procedure is needed before a component repair is justified.

The documented monitor explains the fault decision; vehicle-specific service information is still needed for connector identification and a complete repair procedure.
